The White House recently released a cybersecurity memo from Anne Neuberger, Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology to corporate business leaders about the importance of protecting themselves from the threat of ransomware.
In the memo, she stated that “..organizations must recognize that no company is safe from being targeted by ransomware, regardless of size or location.” “…there are immediate steps you can take to protect yourself, as well as your customers and the broader economy.“
The cybersecurity memo urged them to implement 5 high impact best practices:
- Use multifactor authentication (because passwords alone are routinely compromised),
- Deploy endpoint detection & response (to hunt for malicious activity on a network and block it),
- Encrypt your data (so if data is stolen, it is unusable),
Empower a skilled security team to
4. patch systems rapidly, and
5. incorporate threat information into your system defenses
In addition, the cybersecurity memo asked for companies to:
- Backup your data, system images, and configurations, regularly test them, and keep backups offline
- Update and patch systems promptly
- Test your incident response plan
- Check your security team’s work
- Segment your network
